High Quality Programmes

Short and long term study

At Forrest Hill School we provide quality study programmes for students who are 5 – 11 years old. Students can complete short or long term study programmes.

Short term study is a minimum of 10 weeks.

Students are placed in mainstream classes with New Zealand students of the same age. They attend the English language learning class where they learn to read, write and speak in English. The school is proud of the English Language programme and the team of ESOL teachers and teacher aides who are trained and experienced in teaching English. The Deputy Principal provides pastoral care for all International Students. The students get to know each other well and develop special friendships.

Short Term International Programme - usually in June/ July or during Term 3 in New Zealand (Chinese summer). Many Chinese visiting NZ enrol their students for the 10 week period for their children to learn English and to gain a true Kiwi experience. Our special programme during this term involves hands-on experiences within a kiwi context. We provide quality study programmes for students who are 5 – 11 years old.

Please contact the school office if you would like more information about short or long term study programmes available.

Goals

At Forrest Hill School we provide an integrated supportive environment for our International students. We believe in the following Principles.

  • Know your learners – we get to know our international students as learners. We take the time to understand their language background, language proficiency, and their experiential background. Each student and parent will meet with the ESOL teacher and a senior leader.
  • We have very clear identified learning outcomes – our teachers carefully identify what language the students need to successfully achieve the task.
  • Learning outcomes are explicit and the same for all students – our programme scaffolds the learning for all students.
  • All learners learn best when the experiences are relevant and authentic.
  • We believe in designing rich tasks that provide multiple opportunities for language development including the development of academic language.
  • We believe that learning for our International students should be a balance between productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening, reading) language.
  • All students should be reflective and able to self assess their learning.
